Gravity Forms plugins for Mollie compared

Gravity Forms is one of the most widely used form plugins for WordPress. This plugin allows you to create completely custom forms to collect information. From simple contact forms to comprehensive surveys or payment forms, it’s all possible with Gravity Forms.

Gravity Forms uses add-ons to extend the core plugin with additional features or integrations. An example is the integration with payment provider Mollie to receive online payments via Gravity Forms. However, several plugins are available that enable an integration with Mollie.

In this article, we cover the main similarities and differences between the Pronamic Pay plugin, the GF Mollie by Indigo plugin, and the Mollie add-on by Gravity Forms. This will help you make an informed decision about which plugin best suits your needs.

Pronamic Pay with Mollie for Gravity Forms

An interesting detail: this was the very first integration developed for the Pronamic Pay plugin. In 2011, Pronamic was seeking a solution for a client to connect Mollie and Gravity Forms and decided to build a plugin for this purpose themselves. At the time, it only supported iDEAL payments, but now many more payment methods are supported. It remains one of the most frequently used integrations within the Pronamic Pay plugin.

Key Features

  • Integration with multiple Mollie accounts
  • One-time and recurring payments
  • Multiple payment methods
  • Delayed actions after payment
  • Refunds from within WordPress

Integration with Multiple Mollie Accounts

After installing the Pronamic Pay plugin, a ‘Payments’ section appears in the WordPress environment. Here, under ‘Configurations’, multiple payment gateways can be set up. In your Mollie account, ‘Profiles’ can be created, allowing you to manage one or more websites within your account. Each profile that is created receives unique API keys.

Pronamic Pay uses these API keys to establish the connection with Mollie. This makes it possible to link multiple Mollie accounts to a single website. Consequently, within Gravity Forms, you can link form A to one Mollie account and form B to a different account.

One-Time and Recurring Payments

With the Pronamic Pay plugin, you can receive both one-time and recurring payments. Recurring payments are supported via card payments and at least 14 other payment methods.

Because recurring payments are supported, it’s possible to offer subscriptions via Gravity Forms. It’s also possible to receive periodic donations – ideal for foundations or charities looking to receive a more stable stream of donations.

Mollie offers a wide range of payment methods. Almost all are supported by Pronamic Pay and available within Gravity Forms. Many payment methods allow you to receive both one-time and recurring payments. Depending on the methods activated in your Mollie account, you can see within the Pronamic Pay plugin which methods support one-time and/or recurring payments.

Delayed Actions After Payment

Gravity Forms offers the ability to delay actions based on another action. The Pronamic Pay plugin hooks into this functionality, allowing actions to be delayed based on payment status. This integration supports all plugins and add-ons capable of executing actions. For example, you can postpone email notifications, post publishing, and user registration until after a successful payment. Actions such as newsletter sign-ups, Google Analytics events, or Zapier triggers can also be delayed.

(Partial) Refund Status Synchronization

Similar to the Mollie add-on by Gravity Forms, the Pronamic Pay plugin supports refund synchronization. Crucially, with the Pronamic Pay plugin, it’s possible to process partial refunds in addition to full refunds.

For instance, suppose you rented out a product for €200, including a €100 deposit. After the rental period concludes satisfactorily and the product is returned undamaged, you can refund the €100 deposit via Mollie. This refund is then automatically synchronized with the corresponding entry in the Gravity Forms form.

Mollie Add-on by Gravity Forms

This Mollie add-on has been offered by Gravity Forms since May 7, 2020. The add-on is available as a Pro add-on, meaning it’s included with the Pro ($159 per year) and Elite ($259 per year) licenses for Gravity Forms.

Key Features

  • Connection via Mollie Connect
  • One-time payments
  • Multiple payment methods
  • Register users after payment
  • Refund status synchronization

Connection via Mollie Connect

After activating the Mollie add-on, you can establish a connection with Mollie through the Gravity Forms settings using ‘Mollie Connect’. This connection method utilizes the OAuth protocol. It allows you to log in to your Mollie account and grant permission for the link with Gravity Forms. Subsequently, you configure the necessary settings step-by-step.

Using the button shown, you can log into your Mollie account and authorize the connection between Gravity Forms and your account. Once you’ve accepted, you can specify which ‘Website profile’ from Mollie you wish to use with your forms.

One-time Payments

The Mollie add-on exclusively supports one-time payments. It is not possible to receive recurring payments for items like donations or subscriptions. The payment methods supported include, among others:

  • iDEAL
  • Cards (American Express, MasterCard, Visa)
  • Bank transfer
  • Bancontact
  • eps
  • Przelewy24
  • KBC/CBC Payment Button
  • Belfius Pay Button

To receive payments, you must perform two actions: first, add a Mollie field to your form, and second, create a Mollie feed. In this feed, you define which data needs to be shared with Mollie.

Although the add-on currently only supports one-time payments, Gravity Forms has indicated that adding recurring payments is on their ‘roadmap’. However, there is no known release date for this feature.

Delayed User Registration After Successful Payment

One of the features within the add-on is support for delayed actions specifically for user registration. This enables you to postpone the user registration process until after a successful payment is confirmed. This is also the only delayed action supported by the Mollie add-on.

Refund Status Synchronization

It might occur that a customer requests a refund for a purchase. In such cases, a refund can be processed directly from the linked Mollie account. Within the Mollie account, a refund can be initiated for a specific payment. Once created, the Mollie add-on will synchronize the status of this refund via a webhook to the corresponding Gravity Forms entry, updating the payment status to ‘Refunded’. Consequently, it is not possible to initiate a refund from within WordPress and have it sync to Mollie.

GF Mollie by Indigo

The GF Mollie by Indigo plugin was developed by Indigo Webstudio. In terms of capabilities, it is the most straightforward plugin in this comparison. This simplicity is both a strength and a limitation of the plugin.

Key Features

  • Integration with multiple Mollie accounts
  • Utilizes standard Gravity Forms fields

Integration with Multiple Mollie Accounts

Once you have installed the GF Mollie by Indigo plugin, an additional option appears on the Gravity Forms settings page. Here, you can enter a default Mollie API key that will be used for your forms.

If you wish to link a specific form to a different Mollie account, you can enter an alternative API key within the payment feed settings for that particular form. This provides flexibility in determining which Mollie account to link on a per-form basis.

Use of Standard Gravity Forms Fields

To create a form with payment options, you can utilize the standard Gravity Forms fields. You only need to include fields for the products, the total amount, and potentially VAT in your form. It is not possible to add a specific payment method selection field, as this is not used by the GF Mollie by Indigo plugin. When someone proceeds to pay, the user is redirected to the Mollie payment page, where they must select their preferred payment method.

The absence of an integrated payment method field is somewhat inconvenient, as it introduces an extra step into the payment process.

No Delayed Actions

Unfortunately, with the GF Mollie by Indigo plugin, it is not possible to delay actions until after a successful payment. As a result, all configured actions (like notifications) are triggered immediately upon form submission.

No Recurring Payments

Similar to the official Mollie add-on by Gravity Forms, the GF Mollie by Indigo plugin does not facilitate recurring payments. The plugin was designed solely for processing one-time payments.

Because the plugin primarily establishes a connection with Mollie, and payments are processed via Mollie’s hosted pages, all payment methods activated within the connected Mollie account are automatically offered to the customer. This means the merchant is not restricted by the payment methods specifically supported within the plugin itself.
