From iDEAL
to Wero: The transition phase

The deadline of March 31, 2026, marks the end of the ‘preparation phase.’ As of April 1, the iDEAL | Wero co-branding is no longer just a choice or a background technical project; it is the new standard. While the update of the name and logo on your website should now be complete, the most important phase of the transition is beginning for consumers and banks. What can you expect after April 1?

The shift: From Logo to Wallet

Until now, for many webshops, Wero was simply an additional name next to the trusted iDEAL logo. From April 1, the dynamics change. Banks (EPI members such as Rabobank, ING, and ABN AMRO) are moving from the introductory phase to the familiarization phase to increasingly get consumers used to Wero.

  • Activation of the Wero wallet: During this phase, consumers will be actively encouraged via their own banking app to link their Wero wallet.
  • Changes in the payment flow: For customers paying with iDEAL, the familiar banking environment will increasingly look ‘Wero-branded.’ This is the stage where consumers learn that iDEAL and Wero have become one and the same.

The major consumer campaign: “Wero is here”

Starting in the second quarter of 2026 (immediately following the introductory phase), a national media campaign will launch. This is crucial for your webshop conversion:

  • Recognition: The goal of the national campaign is for consumers to recognize the new Wero logo as the secure successor to iDEAL. By displaying this new logo in combination with the trusted iDEAL logo now, you create a smooth transition and prevent customers from dropping out during checkout.
  • Your role as a merchant: If your (WooCommerce) webshop still displays the old iDEAL logo on April 1, you will miss the connection with this campaign. You then run the risk of customers viewing your payment environment as ‘outdated’ or even unsafe.

What comes after co-branding? (Phase 3 and beyond)

The phase starting on April 1 is a hybrid phase. It is a familiarization period that paves the way for the full replacement of the iDEAL brand name.

  • Instant Payments as standard: Although iDEAL is already fast, the European infrastructure (EPI) will become the engine under the Wero flag. This means that cross-border payments within Europe will be as seamless as an iDEAL payment is today.
  • Added features: Throughout 2026, we will see the first expansions, such as loyalty integrations and Pay-per-Installment options directly within the Wero environment.

Follow developments from your bank and payment provider

The rollout of Wero is a dynamic process conducted in close cooperation with the financial sector. While we at Pronamic Pay ensure that the technology in your WordPress site is future-proof, it is important to stay sharp yourself.

We advise merchants to closely monitor communications from their own bank (such as Rabobank, ING, or ABN AMRO) and their Payment Service Provider (such as Mollie, Adyen, or Buckaroo). They ultimately determine the pace at which new functionalities of the Wero wallet become available for your specific account. By staying well-informed, you ensure that your webshop always makes optimal use of the latest payment developments.

Should there be any developments during the upcoming phase, we will report on them via our website.
